Massage therapy can be used for a variety of physical complaints or simply for promoting relaxation and wellbeing. Here at Newtown Acupuncture Centre we offer massage as a modality on it's own as well as a compliment to our acupuncture treatments. See HERE for our price list.
Taking care of mum, truly is taking care of baby. Pregnant women really need the opportunity to let go and have some self care time. Whether it's for aches and pains or simply to relax, massage can be helpful. This treatment could be coupled with a therapeutic acupuncture session or as a standalone treatment. (Katia or Hernan)
Typically Shiatsu is a 'clothes on' therapy practiced on a mattress and often includes work on the head, hands and feet as well as back, legs, neck, shoulder and abdomen. The practitioner will consider the energy flow lines known as 'meridians' in Chinese medicine and stimulate acupressure points along the body.
"It is a touch of a person's heart coming through the fingers, palms and elbows. The pressure can be light and soft or deep and strong, depending on what the body needs and what feels good to the person. I find my clients find it easier to deal with pain or discomfort when I approach them slowly and mindfully, asking what they need. That is why Shiatsu is also an art of awareness to the body's responses and breath"
Shiatsu practitioners also pay attention to breath as an indicator of one's neurological state of stress or relaxation.
Deep slow breath occurs in a calm nervous system, a state of "rest and digest". Shallow, rapid breath is an outcome of a restless nervous system, a state known as 'fight or flight.' "By helping my clients slow down and deepen their breath, they report feeling calmer in their body and mind." A relaxed body and mind creates the right conditions for growth, repair, and balance of our biological systems.
By massaging the body we create circulation between the tissues and introduce movement and flow by manipulating, pressing, rubbing and stretching skin, connective tissue, muscles, nerves, tendons and ligaments.
We understand the need for athletes and sports people to be free of aches, pains and restrictions so they can train and play with ease.
Tight fascia and sore muscles can lead to a host of subsequent muscle imbalances. We encourage regular treatments to keep athletes at the top of their game.
Our massage therapist, Hernan Rojas Nazar is a martial artist who has competed internationally at championship level in both Latin America and here in NZ. He understands how challenging and rewarding competitive sports can be. (Hernan, Katia or Oscar)
Mobilisation & Stretching
Injuries, lack of exercise and natural ageing can all result in restricted muscle and joint mobility. Massage therapy can help stretch and relax tense muscles, allowing for increased range of motion. We encourage people to take stretching into their daily life and also offer classes in Shaolin Kung Fu, Tai Chi and Yoga, which are all great systems for increasing flexibility and strength of the joints, muscles and tendons. (Hernan)
Life can be full of responsibilities and challenges, and sometime this can leave us feeling disconnected and worn out. Relaxation massage can be a great way to take time out for yourself and relax tight tense and tired muscles and get you back in touch with your body. (Oscar, Hernan, Katia)
Hot Stone Massage
The hot stones create warmth and circulation at the place they are applied, helping to relax tight and sore muscles. This treatment is particularly good for those that find heat very therapeutic. Hot stone massage provides a lovely sense of relaxation. The massage therapist will continue to massage parts of the body while the stones do their work on other parts. (Hernan)
Acupuncture & Massage
Massage and acupuncture treatment work well together and we provide special rates for those wishing to use both these therapies on the same day. You can see two practitioners, however it must be on the same day.

Cupping is not unique to TCM. It has been used across a variety of cultures and ages for different reasons. At our clinic we mostly use it for muscle pain- very often applied to large muscle groups on the back, shoulders, ITB and gluteal muscles.
Cupping usually leaves a round cupping mark for 3-10 days after the treatment. It does not tend to hurt, but can feel quite tight. It also may feel a little tender for a day after the treatment. We advise keeping the area covered for the first 4 hours. (Katia or Hernan) Plastic not glass cupping. (Please book with an acupuncturist if you want glass/flame cupping)
Weight Reduction Support
Our massage therapist Hernan trained in the technique of weight reduction massage in Chile where it is a popular treatment. The practitioner manually stimulates the fat cells, breaking fatty accumulations. This treatment is bought as a package, as 10 treatments are needed over a 5 week period. As well as this this, we offer TCM support with acupuncture and Chinese herbal medicine, ensuring a healthy and sustainable pathway for weight loss. We believe that the more internally balanced your metabolism is, the more sustainable your weight loss journey will be. (Hernan)

Sliding glass cupping
Sliding cupping, and cupping in general is not for everyone. It can look more painful than it feels, and leave cupping marks for up to 10 days.
The key to sliding cupping is finding the right level of suction under the cup, so it pulls and stretches the fascia in a comfortable way. For those that love strong treatments or deep tissue, this is for you!
This technique creates a kind of micro-trauma, that then encourages healing and lymphatic activation.
